Anybody who owns a security dog understands that in order to raise it well and in the way they want, it needs to be trained. The belief among many people is that dogs are trained so that they can obey their masters and do whatever is commanded of them. Nonetheless, these are simply misconceptions because many dog owners train their K9s to increase their safety and also the safety of other people near the dog and also to make the bond between pets and their owners stronger. Dogs are also trained to ensure that they can communicate easily with their owners and to ensure that they understand what they owner expects from them in terms of security. Dogs should be trained in order for them to play their role in offering security the way they should. Security dogs serve their purpose better when they understand what they are supposed to do and their work in the family or company.
Training a security dog becomes futile if the dog does not understand the lessons and it is therefore important to ensure it does. Puppies are definitely easier to train because they do not have any defined characters yet and they are therefore more receptive. More advanced training methods and techniques would have to be used of the dog being trained is an adult. This is mainly because one has to train it to change what it already knows and become a different dog. Regardless of the size and age of the dog, the first training technique is teaching the dog how to obey whatever it is told. This is referred to as obedience training and may involve simple lessons such as the dog understanding its name and knowing when to respond to it. Other phases of obedience training such as recognizing danger and how to react to it can then gradually be introduced after this first phase.
When a dog learns to obey, it is said to have passed the most important stage of training as all other commands and lessons will fall in place easily. When a dog obeys and responds to people giving instructions, it will become more docile and manageable and will therefore play a more important role when expected to offer protection to its owner. After the training, dogs also understand that they should not attack people unless they sense danger and they are therefore trained how to tell what is dangerous and what is not. This lesson is more so important for people who require the security on a larger scale such as police officers and property guards.
