Now that you have brought your new dog home it is time to start the housebreaking. One that can only lead to confusion for the dog later on is giving your new dog a little time to get to know the family and the house before laying down the law. Truthfully, you cannot expect a dog who has been allowed to have full run of the house to suddenly accept new rules and adapt quickly to housebreaking.
It’s Not Too Late
You are still able to fix the situation even if you have let your dog run free with no rules. Contrary to popular belief, it is never too late to start dog training. Whether your puppy is young or old you can still include housebreaking into his/her daily routine. It is important to pick out the behavior that concerns you the most,whether it is dog chewing, dog biting, or dog growling that you are dealing with. After housebreaking them on the first behavior, then you can move on to the next.
You have to start housebreaking as soon as possible to ensure that your puppy never develops into one of those aggressive dogs you hear about on the news. Tips For Housebreaking
* Restrict food and water to the appropriate meal times
* If you are using pee pads then select one area and keep the pads there
* Praise the dog when good behavior is shown
* Don’t hit the dog if he misses the pee pad
* After fifteen or twenty minutes of giving the puppy something to eat or drink, it needs to be taken to the pee pad
A lot of people leave water and food out for their dog all day long. Although this is an acceptable routine for older dogs who are more accustomed to holding their bladder, it is not advisable for puppies who do not yet know how to. Young puppies do not have the ability to hold their bladder for long periods of time. This can result in accidents in the home for which you cannot really blame your puppy. Making food and water constantly available can be counter-productive to your housebreaking goal.
Place the pee pad in the spot of the home where your puppy goes if he continues to miss the pee pad. Housebreaking at this stage just simply means that you are getting the puppy adjusted to going to the bathroom on top of the pad. Once they are used to it, you can continue with housebreaking by slowing moving the pee pad every few days towards the spot you eventually want the pads to reside at.
While this housebreaking process may seem like it takes forever, it is extremely important. You don’t want your dog using the bathroom everywhere.
