Treatment for Hip Dysplasia
As in many breeds there are health issues for which the breeder
should be careful. People acquiring new puppies can avoid some issues by asking
the breeder for health clearances of the father and mother of the litter, in
particular, Canine Eye Research Foundation (CERF) and Orthopedic Foundation
(OFA) certifications for the father and mother. However, health issues can
still show up. Hip dysplasia and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), are two
such diseases for which veterinarians are working on genetic markers to
determine carriers.

Dog Owner's Guide: PennHip method of diagnosing hip
dysplasia For 30 years, this same x-ray view has been used to
subjectively grade hips as having excellent, good, or fair conformation and to
try to predict which dogs are less likely to develop CHD. Breeders hoped that
breeding the best dogs and removing others from the breeding program would
eliminate hip dysplasia. Unfortunately, there is still a 20-25 percent chance
of producing a puppy with CHD even when using the OFA method of hip evaluation.
Clearly, a better diagnostic method is needed.
