Only by establishing a strong bond with the dog can enable the trainer to determine which best strategy to use, to discover the method of motivating the pet to respond, to assign the length of time to spend in training the dog and to assess the training progress before moving on to the next trick.
• Start with simple and easy trick level in a place where the dog is familiar with or comfortable. Make sure there are no things to distract its attention like the presence of other people or a toy to play with. When the dog has established the routine, gradually increase the level of difficulty by putting some twists to the trick or adding some props to determine if the dog has formed the habit.
• Be consistent in giving out commands or instructions. During dog tricks training, the pet is expecting to receive cues and guidance from the trainer. Make sure to provide clear and timely messages for the dog to respond accordingly.
• Do not attempt to train a dog after its feeding time or during its hyperactive moments. Wait until the pet is in a more composed or calmer state to make sure it is more capable of concentrating or being focused on what it is being told to do.
Tools and Gadgets Used for Training Dogs
Training dogs to learn tricks do not require any special items. The most essential thing that matters is the absolute patience and consistency of the trainer in teaching a willing pet. However, some helpful implements can be employed to make the process more controlled.
Target Stick: A target stick is used in the training method called targeting wherein the dog is guided to a particular position or place where the trainer wants the canine to be.
Clicker: This important gadget is used to create a special clicking sound to signal the precise moment for the dog to perform an act. A clicker is also called a conditioned reinforcer used as a communication tool to trigger the dog to act upon hearing the distinctive sound.
Training Treats: Dogs can be easily motivated once they understand that they are going to be rewarded for certain behaviors. Training treats are also called primary reinforcer because dogs can be expected to perform anything just to receive these treats. However, giving treats are only advisable when teaching dogs with new tricks. Treats can be gradually phased out once they dogs have learned the routine already.
