Stud Management Is An Important Part Of Dog Breeding

So, you want to start a dog breeding program? You have read everything and you are quite aware about different aspects of dog breeding. Have you thought about whether you want to start with a female or want to keep a male stud dog for your breeding program? If you are an owner of a very good male dog, you can offer him as a stud dog to other breeders. If this is the case, you must be ready to deal with stud dog management, which involves keeping in-season bitches and learning how to do successful mating.

Stud Dog
A dog does not become a stud in a day. Teaching a dog how to become a stud starts from the young age of 12-16 weeks. Allow the puppy to run around with older intact bitches. This way the puppy will learn the social signals from the bitch. It is most likely that the bitch will put the puppy in his place. When a bitch is ready to mate she will signal her readiness to the male.

A male dog is ready to breed when he is about 8-9 months, but this should not mean that you should breed him so early. For successful dog breeding programs, most of the owners wait till he is more mature physically and also mentally. When you are breeding your dog for the first time it is best to do it with an experienced bitch. You should avoid mating him with inexperienced or aggressive bitches, because she might end up hurting your dog. For the first time you should assist your dog. You should definitely be present when the mating takes place.

Stud Management for the Female
One of the core parts of stud management is taking care of someone’s bitch. You are responsible for her health, safety, and happiness. You have to provide a nice and healthy environment. The bitch has to feel relaxed and happy. You have to ensure that she does not mate with some other dog. In dog breeding this has happened many times and has often led to the souring of the relationship between two dog owners.

An experienced stud owner will know when to breed a bitch. He will watch her closely and take notes. Breeders often do the Progesterone testing to pinpoint the right time to breed. Sometimes natural breeding might not occur for one reason or the other. Under such circumstances breeder often have to resort to Artificial Insemination. Would you like to fertilize the dam with a fresh semen sample or a frozen one?

Dog breeding is a time-consuming process. A breeder has to devote many years to this process to be able to see the results. Stud management is not easy. Ask those who have done it and they will tell you how many sleepless night they have spent trying to get their dogs to mate.
